Dividing by Zero

Shelby Rogers

You start with an oval,

a simple scrawling across lined pages

sometimes misshapen

it depends on how steady the hand is

maybe it’s a circle then?

Referred with the letter O

Now divide it.

That’s just a single line;

it highlights the importance

of rock bottom.

Come on, draw it straight!

The hogs squeal

when hands shake under pressure

Any number should do!

Why not start small?

A simple swish as graphite stains paper

two C’s stacked on top of each other.

Do you always dally away time like this?

What can be divided by zero?

It’s leaving places for people who never existed

a full plate of hors d’oeuvres.
